Play-By-Play

10 … 9 … 8 …: The 135th Cincinnati Reds Opening Day is now 10 days away. All of the architects, designers, engineers, construction workers and administrators responsible for the construction of Great American Ball Park are excited and anxious to see how the fans react when they walk through the ballpark gates.

Following are some Opening Day attractions that should truly make the day memorable:

bulletTed Kluszewski – The eight-foot bronze statue of the “Big Klu” will be unveiled on Crosley Terrace. The statue is one of four to be erected throughout the season. Statues of Joe Nuxhall, Ernie Lombardi and Frank Robinson also will be unveiled later in the year.

bulletCommemorative Baseballs – Great American Insurance will give away
commemorative baseballs to all fans in attendance.

bulletPepsi Power Stacks – Unlike Cinergy Field, Great American Ball Park features a signature home run/victory celebration that the club hopes will become as recognizable as the Shea Stadium Big Apple or Bernie Brewer’s slide. The Pepsi Power Stacks combine a display of steam, fireworks and electronics that are sure to please. The Reds hope to show off this feature on Opening Day with multiple home runs and a victory to send fans home happy.

bulletFood – Another marked difference fans will notice during their
first trip to Great American Ball Park is the food. A wide variety of dining options will be served out of uniquely named concession stands including Pete’s Pizza, Knuxy’s Knots, Doggy’s Dogs, Fowl Pole, Redland Grill and Davey’s Dogs among others. The park also will have a signature mustard as well as other local favorites such as Montgomery Inn ribs and Skyline Chili.

Final Countdown: During the final week leading to Opening Day various crews will be putting the finishing touches on Great American Ball Park. Grounds crews will continue to groom the playing surface to achieve the perfect look and feel. Other crews will replace light bulbs, test electronics, program sound systems and tidy up around the park. All that is needed now is for the ump to yell, “Play Ball!”
