Virtual Law Library in Cincinnati Caters to Law
Community
The Cincinnati Law Library Association has activated virtual services for
lawyers and others to remotely access case law and legal commentary 24 hours a
day. The two services, from HeinOnline and Fastcase.com, include Federal and
state case law from across the country and over 1,000 law journals, and move the
Cincinnati Law Library from a solely physical space to a blended virtual law
library.
(PRWEB) September 1, 2005 -- For the last 150 years, the Hamilton County
legal profession had to go to the Law Library to perform legal research. Its
extensive print collection contains historic state laws, for Ohio and the rest
of the country, that remain unavailable in any electronic database. In recent
years, legal research has changed and many Law Library users prefer to do their
research online or at times when the Hamilton County Courthouse is closed.
“The Cincinnati Law Library needs to deliver legal information to lawyers and
others who need it, when they need it,” says David Whelan, Hamilton County Law
Librarian. Now, many members of the Cincinnati Law Library Association can gain
added value by performing initial research remotely. They can supplement their
research by using the Law Library’s print collection and internal electronic
databases.
The new services provide a substantial amount of foundational legal information.
Fastcase.com has case law from all 50 states as well as Federal case law from
its appellate and trial courts, including the bankruptcy courts.
"We are thrilled to be part of one of the country's most advanced online law
libraries," said Ed Walters, CEO of Fastcase. "The new offerings of the
Cincinnati Law Library Association will truly level the playing field, giving
smaller firms the kind of national, online access to the law that is usually
reserved only for the largest law firms." Philip Rosenthal, President of
Fastcase, added, "By making online access to the law affordable and convenient,
we're also improving the quality of practice and making it more affordable for
lawyers to do pro bono and nonbillable work, which is important to both our
company and our profession."
In addition, HeinOnline has over 1,000 law journals, treaties, and other
publications in full text. Law Library members can read commentary and follow up
that research by reviewing current case law. Fastcase.com also links to state
and Federal statutes and agency regulations.
“County law libraries may never be fully virtual,” says Whelan. “All legal
research information is not available electronically, let alone on the
Internet”, he says. “A substantial amount of Ohio state law, including material
as recent as General Assembly laws from the 1980s, are unavailable in electronic
format. Additionally, lawyers indicate a continuing preference to use print
publications to research legal commentary and practical topics. Fastcase.com and
HeinOnline enable the Cincinnati Law Library to efficiently balance our many
print resources with 24 hour access to electronic databases.”
