Electronic Media vs. Book Form: The best of both worldsThe Law Library is building a CD-ROM collection. For members who have moved into the computer age with ease, come on in and use this research tool. For members that are technologically challenged and would like some aid in using the computers, the Library staff is available to lend a hand. If you would prefer training for the electronic publications, many publishers offer individual training days or search assistance over the telephone. We can assist you in setting up direct training from the publishers. If there is sufficient interest, regular classes may be arranged. For those members that just can’t seem to let go of that book format or wish to checkout the material the Library is keeping a hard copy. Also in case the power goes out. Below is a list of the CD-ROM material we have recently purchased.
The Library subscribes to several publications that include diskettes Below is a list of current forms on disk.
Again, we offer assistance with electronic and print publications. We have computers, printers and software, including Microsoft Word, Word Perfect, and PFS: Window Works, and WordStar. Several computers are equipped with CD-ROM bays if you have an electronic publication you would like to bring in and use. Or bring your own Powerbook or Thinkpad and plug in. If you require assistance, please let us know. CD-ROM Changes and UpgradesShepards software version changes : Besides the new look of the material sent by Shepards, there have been a few software changes. According to Shepards, the changes will reveal more situations in which your case can become bad law, they were always there, but now they are easier to find. Target and Select will help you narrow your search to specific headnotes, letters and, letter groupings in seconds, and Signal alerts you to the kinds of letters Shepard’s has assigned. In most instances the single letter abbreviations are expanded on screen. It’s easier to work with the results. The "more" link has been replaced with horizontal scrolling, and the most recent cites are at the front of the list to make last minute cite checking easier.West software version changes: West’s innovative PREMISE 3.0 contains several new features that will make your research tasks easier. They have added Natural Language searching, hypertext links to retrieve cases in your CD-ROM books citing the case you are viewing, printing enhancements, inline images, a streamlined user interface, more links to cases, and improved compression.
