Manner: Accident (2000)

An accidental death is a result of an unnatural cause where there is no evidence of intent to cause harm.

Two hundred ninety-eight deaths were certified as accidental deaths during calendar year 2000. Of these, the largest single group consisted of people who died as a result of a motor vehicle traffic accident. There were 105 such deaths in 2000, down from 118 the previous year. Of those 105 deaths, 19 or nearly 18 percent tested positively for alcohol and /or other drugs at autopsy.

The second largest group of accidental death victims consisted of people involved in falls. Such accidents resulted in 93 deaths, down from 104 in 1999. Of those 93 deaths, 68 were 72 years of age or older. The great majority of these accidents occurred in the home.

Drug overdoses once again accounted for the third largest group in the accidental death category. Fifty-three accidental drug overdoses accounted for nearly 18 percent of the accidental deaths in Hamilton County in 2000.
