ANNUAL REPORT
|
Manner: Accident (2001)
An accidental death is a result of an unnatural cause where there is no evidence of intent to cause harm. Three hundred twenty-nine deaths were certified as accidental deaths during calendar year 2001. Of these, the largest single group consisted of people who died as a result of a motor vehicle traffic accident. There were 109 such deaths in 2001, up slightly from 105 the previous year. Of those 109 deaths, 26 or nearly 24 percent tested positively for alcohol and /or other drugs at autopsy. The second largest group of accidental death victims consisted of people involved in falls. Such accidents resulted in 103 deaths, up from 93 in 2000. Of those 103 deaths, 62 were 72 years of age or older. The great majority of these accidents occurred in the home. Drug overdoses once again accounted for the third largest group in the accidental death category. Fifty-four accidental drug overdoses accounted for more than 16 percent of the accidental deaths in Hamilton County in 2001.
