An accidental death is a result of an unnatural cause where there is no evidence of intent to cause harm. Three hundred fifty-one deaths were certified as accidental deaths during 2001. Of these, the largest single group consisted of people who died as a result of a motor vehicle traffic accident. There were 132 such deaths in 2002, up notably from 105 last year. Of those 132 deaths, 38 or nearly 29 percent tested positively for alcohol and /or other drugs at autopsy. The second largest group of accidental death victims consisted of people involved in falls. Such accidents resulted in 107 deaths, up from 103 in 2001. Of those 109 deaths, 75 were 72 years of age or older. The great majority of these accidents occurred in the home. Drug overdoses accounted for the third largest group in the accidental death category. Seventy-two accidental drug overdoses accounted for more than 20 percent of the accidental deaths in Hamilton County in 2002.
