Manner:  Accident (2003)

 

An accidental death is a result of an unnatural cause where there is no evidence of intent to cause harm.

Three hundred sixty-five deaths were certified as accidental deaths during 2003.  Of these, once again,  the largest single group consisted of people who died as a result of a motor vehicle traffic accident.  There were 130 such deaths in 2003, virtually the same as 2002 which saw 132 such deaths.  Of those 130 deaths, 44 or nearly 34 percent tested positively for alcohol and /or other drugs at autopsy.  

The second largest group of accidental death victims was drug overdoses, Ninety-three accidental drug overdoses accounted for more than 25 percent of the accidental deaths in Hamilton County in 2003

The third largest group in the accidental death category was people involved in falls.  Such accidents resulted in 92 deaths, down from 107 in 2002. Of those 92 deaths, 64 were 72 years of age or older.  The great majority of these accidents occurred in the home.
