Manner:  Accident (2004)

An accidental death is a result of an unnatural cause where there is no evidence of intent to cause harm.

Three hundred thirty-seven deaths were certified as accidental deaths during 2004.  Of these, once again,  the largest single group consisted of people who died as a result of a motor vehicle traffic accident.  There were 109 such deaths in 2004, down from 2003's total of 130.   Of those 109 deaths, 42 or nearly 39 percent tested positively for alcohol and /or other drugs at autopsy.

The second largest group of accidental death victims changed in 2004 from  drug overdoses to falls.  Ninety-seven accidental falls accounted for nearly 30 percent of the accidental deaths in Hamilton County in 2004. Of those 97 deaths, 72, or just over 74 percent were 72 years of age or older.  The great majority of these accidents occurred in the home.

The third largest group in the accidental death category was accidental drug overdoses.  Such accidents resulted in 95 deaths, up slightly from 93 in 2003.
