DEATHS BY MONTH

An accidental death is a result of an unnatural cause where there is no evidence of intent to cause harm.

Three hundred eighty-eight deaths were certified as accidental deaths during 2005.  Of these, as in past years, the largest single group consisted of people who died as a result of a motor vehicle traffic accident, 30%.  Of those deaths nearly 43% tested positively for alcohol and /or other drugs at autopsy.  

Once again the second largest group of accidental death victims remaind those who died as the result of a fall, 29%. Just over 77% were 72 years of age or older.  The great majority of these accidents occurred in the home.

Not far behind was Accidental Drug Overdoses accounting for 27% of all accidental deaths in 2005.
