Annual Report Within Hamilton County are a number of major hospitals and trauma centers serving the tri-state area. The county is also home to the Shriners Burns Institute which deals with patients from across the country. Consequently, there are numerous deaths in Hamilton County each year wherein the precipitating incident leading to death occurred outside Hamilton County, but the death falls under the jurisdiction of the Hamilton County Coroner. Thus, the statistics appearing in this Annual Report do not necessarily agree with numbers reported by police agencies throughout the county.
The Hamilton County Coroner’s office is in reality a regional facility which provides forensic services to surrounding counties on a fee-for-service basis. These services include autopsies, firearms examination, serology, toxicology and others. In 2006, the office performed 154 autopsies for the coroners of other Ohio counties as well as counties in Indiana. In such instances, although much of the work is done in Hamilton County, the death investigation remains within the jurisdiction of the police and coroner of the county of origin.
