Manner: Homicide: 2000
A death is classified as a homicide when the death results from
injuries inflicted by another person with explicit or implicit intent to
harm. A homicide is not necessarily a murder. The person responsible for
causing the injuries may be charged in connection with the death or the
prosecuting attorney may decline to file charges in certain circumstances.
During 2000, there were 52 deaths in Hamilton County which were ruled
homicides. That number includes 4 homicides in which the homicidal
violence occurred in another county but the victim died in Hamilton
County, usually following transport into the county for emergency medical
treatment, a number comparable to that seen in previous years.
The 52 homicides represent an increase from the 41 homicides in 1999.
However, this is still less than the average of 58 homicides per year over
the past 15 years.
Fifty-two percent of 2000’s homicides were the result of handgun
violence, a small decease from just over 54 percent in 1999. Just over 30
percent of the homicides were caused by blunt trauma, compared to just
over 22 percent in 1999.
Of the 52 homicide victims, nearly 33 percent tested positive for drugs
and/or alcohol.
