ANNUAL REPORT

Manner: Suicide 2000

A suicide is a death resulting from a self-inflicted injury which was the result of an explicit or implicit purpose to end one’s life. In 2000, 96 deaths in Hamilton County were ruled suicides, accounting for 11 percent of the deaths investigated by this office,  an increase of about 2 percent over the number of cases determined to be suicidal in 1998 and in 1999.

In 51 percent of such cases the suicidal means was a handgun; a shotgun was used in another 2 percent.

The remaining cases were divided among a variety of lethal means as described graphically in the suicide section of this report.

As elsewhere in the nation, suicide continues to occur predominantly among white males.

In 23 percent of suicides, postmortem toxicology analysis revealed the presence of alcohol and/or a drug or drugs of abuse, down from 25.5 percent last year.
