Hamilton County voters approve a half-cent tax increase to build new stadiums for both the Cincinnati Bengals and the Cincinnati Reds.

 

bulletJuly 1, 1998

Located at Second & Main Streets near the Ohio River, the site once known as "The Wedge," is announced as the future site of the new Reds ball park. The site is located between the existing Cinergy Field and Firstar Center.

 

bulletAugust 8, 1998

Hamilton County announces that HOK Sport will design the new Reds ball park.

 

bulletOctober 7, 1998

The first renderings of the new ball park are unveiled.

 

bulletFebruary 1999

Hunt Construction Group, Inc. is chosen by Hamilton County as construction manager.

 

bulletMay 21, 1999

The Cincinnati Reds and Hamilton County sign a 30-year lease for the new ball park.

Parsons Brinckerhoff, Ohio is chosen by Hamilton County as the project manager.

The Cincinnati Reds and Hamilton County unveil the architectural model of the ball park.

Great American Insurance Company and the Cincinnati Reds announce a deal to name the new baseball facility "Great American Ball Park."

Demolition and site preparation begins by dismantling the walkway between Cinergy Field and the Firstar Center, as well as demolition of the eastern side of the Cinergy Field parking garage and the parking lot immediately east of Cinergy Field.

Construction of Great American Ball Park officially begins with a ceremonial groundbreaking.

 

bulletOctober 2000

Removal of the center field "Bite" from Cinergy Field begins, allowing further construction of Great American Ball Park. Approximately 14,000 seats were removed from the existing facility.

 

bulletNovember 2000

The first-ever grass turf is installed in the infield of Cinergy Field.

 

bulletJanuary 16, 2001

Removal of the Cinergy Field "Bite" is completed.

 

bulletFebruary 2001

Installation of grass turf in Cinergy Field’s outfield is completed.

 

bulletApril 2, 2001

The Cincinnati Reds play their first game in the redesigned Cinergy Field.

 

bulletJune 1, 2001

Crews begin placing concrete in the left field seating area as the ball park begins to take shape.

 

bulletJuly 23, 2001

Installation of the structural steel skeleton of the new ball park begins.

 

bulletAugust 2001

Framing for the main scoreboard above the left field seats is installed.

 

bulletJuly 12, 2002

Permanent power source is turned on.

Foul poles installed.

Great American Ball Park sign on top of main scoreboard installed.

Final demolition of Cinergy Field begins.

The Cincinnati Reds move into the new administration building on the grounds of the Great American Ball Park.

The field installation begins at Great American Ball Park.

The Cincinnati Reds play their first game against the Pittsburgh Pirates in the new Great American Ball Park.

 

bulletSummer 2004

Reds Hall of Fame and Gift Shop and other out buildings on the west side of the Great American Ball Park complex are scheduled to open to the public.
