"Build It" Say Comment Cards Regarding New Reds Ballpark

Cincinnati, June 16, 2000 - Most Reds fans who completed comment cards during the first showing of the design development plans and model for the new Cincinnati Reds Ballpark on May 11 at Cinergy Field were pleased with what they saw.

Fans who attended the May 11 game were asked to complete comment cards with suggestions for and reaction to the new Reds Ballpark design. They saw the ballpark renderings and architectural model in the design development stage, which represents approximately 40 percent of the final design.

Of the 80 responses left by fans, the positives outnumbered the negatives by a 2 to 1 margin with 30 positive comments and 14 negative comments. The remaining 36 comments were neutral - offering more suggestions and thoughts rather than opinions.

"We are pleased most fans who viewed the renderings and model of the new Reds Ballpark were happy with the design," said Mike Hand of HOK Sport. "For those fans who had additional comments, we are currently taking them into consideration." Hand, who was on-site at the unveiling to answer questions and explain details of the model, is the Reds Ballpark project manager for Kansas City-based HOK Sport, the master architect and engineer for the project.

Comments from the fans ranged from suggestions for naming the ballpark to the height of the outfield fence to the need for additional concessions and restrooms.

"You should name it Pete Rose Park," said a fan from Milford.

One fan from New Castle, Ind. said that designers should "Put a 10' fence up, so there are no cheap homeruns!"

Of the suggestions for more restrooms and concessions, more than one fan suggested putting restrooms outside of the park. "We need restrooms outside of the park for the grandchildren," said a fan from Ft. Loramie, Ohio.

Fifty percent (or 7 out of 14) of the negative comments received by fans were in regard to the Sycamore Street "notch." Most comments about the notch requested that it be dropped from the design because the additional seating could be placed in that area.

"Lose the notch," said a fan from Villa Hills, Ky. "You're taking away good seats."

Plans for additional opportunities for fans to view the new ballpark model are in the works. The new Reds ballpark is expected to be open in April 2003.
