WHAT: |
On May 6, the 12th and final light tower at Great American Ball Park will be hoisted into place, overlooking the future home of the Cincinnati Reds. The installation signifies that the highest point of construction has been reached and completed. To mark this “Topping Out,” crews will commemorate the event with a brief, historically based ritual during which an evergreen tree and an American flag will be raised to the highest point of the structure. This effort is a gesture of wishing prosperity to the building and safety to those who use it, as well as recognizing the diligence of the construction workers for their care and concern while building it. Though the origin of Topping Out ceremonies dates back to ancient Scandinavian and Egyptian times, the modern interpretation carries over many facets from the original traditions and can have a variety of meanings depending on the project. For the Great American Ball Park Topping Out, the evergreen tree symbolizes strength, life and renewal, and the American flag signifies that the structure has been built with pride and dignity.
